INDIA - 2014 ended with Poultry India showing overwhelming participation by the world’s leading companies and with a record number of visitors, according to Dr T. Kotaiah of Indbro Research & Breeding Farms Pvt. Ltd.

The knowledge day organised on 25 November had the presence of all the poultry technicians of the country at one place amidst the presence of many international experts sharing the knowledge on various subjects.

K. Chandra Sekhar Rao, the honourable chief minister of the leading poultry producing state, Telangana showed his full involvement in taking this valuable food production sector further by providing all the help and encouragement to the producers, in promoting the consumption of eggs for midday meals. He promised to take up the pending issues of the industry at administrative level, both at the state and the centre.

Prices of the poultry feed have been favourable during 2014 and the carry-over stocks of corn and soybeans are likely to maintain the prices at reasonable levels in 2015.

Decorticated and processed cottonseed cake has emerged among the list of protein sources in the poultry feed. Many trials are underway to make it acceptable. The egg production sector continues to expand and egg prices crossed four rupees at the farm gate in 2014.

Large states like West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh showed huge expansion on egg production. In others, large broiler producers are expanding, as in the central Indian states of Madhya Pradesh and Odisha, where production used to be low.

Avian influenza reported in the state of Kerala in some ducks was quickly resolved by stamping out, preventing the further spread. This is not an area with a dense poultry population.

The death of few wild birds at Chandigarh turned out to have little effect, which came as a great relief to the neighbouring poultry-producing state of Haryana. Growing awareness among the poultry producers and the confidence of consumers have helped in resolving the issue without any effect on consumption.

The small incidents are helping in enhancing the level of biosecurity at all stages of production. Food safety and the need to produce eggs and chicken free of antibiotic residues are being discussed and practiced by the producers voluntarily.

India offers great scope for local consumption, scientific growth in the production sector and support by the Governments should take the country's poultry Industry to much higher levels in 2015 and many more years to come.
