South Korea to Impose Poultry Movement Ban

16 January 2015

SOUTH KOREA - In a move to halt the spread of the avian influenza virus, the government is to impose a 36-hour ban on the movement of poultry in the country from the early morning of 17 January.

Poultry transport will be banned for 36 hours starting at 6 am on 17 January as part of efforts to prevent the spread of avian influenza, reports Chosun Ilbo.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs ordered the temporary ban on 15 January to prohibit workers and vehicles from entering poultry farms.

The order will affect roughly 106,000 people and 31,000 farms nationwide.

Decontamination will take place during the stoppage to prevent the spread of sporadic outbreaks.

Since the first outbreak in Yeongam, South Jeolla Province, in September, cases have been confirmed in nearby farms but now avian influenza has been spreading to other regions including Busan and Gyeonggi Province.
