Low-path Avian Flu Virus Detected at South African Ostrich Farms

SOUTH AFRICA - The H5N2 low-pathogenic avian influenza virus has been detected at three ostrich farms in Western Cape since November 2014.

The veterinary authority sent Follow-up Report No.3 dated 27 February to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The H5N2 low-pathogenic avian flu virus has been detected in 767 out of 2,715 ostriches at three farms at Oudsthoorn in Western Cape Province since the previous report in late November 2014. The most recent detection was on 14 January 2015.

The following control measures are being applied: quarantine, movement control inside the country and screening while vaccination is prohibited and there is no treatment of affected animals.
