Oman Bans Poultry Imports from Indian Region over Bird Flu Scares

02 March 2015

OMAN – An imports ban has been announced by the Oman government on poultry products from a region in India following reports of an avian influenza outbreak.

A decision came from the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries shutting off product from Chandigarh last week although no other regions are affected, reports Muscat Daily.

Sampling has started in neighbouring Punjab and Haryana. The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) confirmed a highly pathogenic strain of the virus in Chandigarh late last year.

The impact of the decision has been played down by importers.

Prashant Desai, manager of Al Hamadi Trading and Contracting said: “In Oman, we generally import eggs from Namakkal in Tamil Nadu, which is the largest egg-producing region of the country [India]. Additionally, we have reduced imports from India as those from countries like Iran, Saudi Arabia have increased as well as continuous and robust local production.”
