Viet Nam Reports H5N6 High-path Bird Flu in Poultry Flock

VIET NAM - There has been a new outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza of the H5N6 sub-type in the north-east of the country, the first since October 2014.

The veterinary authority sent an Immediate Notification dated 19 March to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

It describes an outbreak of the disease, which started on 12 March, in a village poultry flock at Thon 2 in Thanh Hoa province in the north-east of the country.

Of the 670 birds in the flock, 353 showed symptoms and all the birds have been destroyed.

The presence of the H5N6 subtype of the highly pathogenic avian influenza A virus has been confirmed.

The usual control measures are being applied: stamping out; vaccination in response to the outbreak and disinfection of infected premises/establishment(s) but no treatment of affected animals.
