Avian Flu Hits Two More Taiwanese Goose Flocks

26 March 2015

TAIWAN - There have been two new outbreaks of H5N2 highly pathogenic avian flu on goose farms in western Taiwan.

The latest report from the veterinary authority to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), dated 25 March, outlines two new outbreaks of H5N2 highly pathogenic avian influenza in the second week of March.

Both outbreaks were on farms in Chiayi county but in different towns. In total, 7,800 geese were affected; 3,574 died and 4,226 were destroyed. As in previous outbreaks, abnormal mortalities were observed.

The National Laboratory (AHRI) has confirmed the presence of the H5N2 subtype HPAI virus.

The farms have been put under movement restrictions. All animals on the infected farms have been culled, and thorough cleaning and disinfection have been conducted after the stamping-out operation. Surrounding poultry farms within a 3-km radius of the infected farms will be under intensified surveillance for three months.
