Confusion over cholesterol is over and the health benefits of eggs means they are now recommended in healthy diets, says the industry body.

Last year, 32 million eggs were eaten in the UK each day – 11.7 billion for the year.

Major slimming plans, such as Weight Watchers and Slimming World, include them, as do the Atkins and Paleo diet.

A growing trend in popularity in recent years means consumption has returned to pre-Salmonella scare levels, addressing a trend of decline since the 1960s.
