BAHRAIN – The country’s leading broiler unit faces relocation so a new housing development can be built in its place.
Councillors have demanded the move after years of complaints from Hamala residents about the smell coming from the Delmon Poultry Company Complex, reports Trade Arabia.
Likely new locations are Sitra and Askar, “where no one lives”, a spokesman told the journal.
Ongoing negotiations to build “hundreds of homes” on a plot of land adjacent to the complex have followed a deadline to comply with hygiene standards by various bodies.
According to the paper, councillors support the proposal.
"Urbanisation has increased dramatically since two decades ago when the company was founded, and at the time it was located in the middle of nowhere but now it is surrounded by homes and residential compounds," said committee chairman Khalid Qambar.
"Residents are complaining about foul smell and stench coming from inside the complex which is a major problem. The company has agreed to deal with it, but it is doing so very slowly.”
