Follow-up Report No.16 dated 14 April from the veterinary authority to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) reports two new outbreaks – both in Yunlin country – of H5N2 highly pathogenic avian influenza, which started between 26 and 29 March.

The first outbreak was in Shuilin Township, affecting a flock of 3,000 geese; 2,112 of the birds died and the rest from the flock has been destroyed.

Three days later, the disease hit a turkey flock in Kouhu Township, in which all 2,500 of the birds died.

Following abnormally high mortality on the two farms, samples were sent to the National Laboratory (AHRI) for diagnosis and the H5N2 subtype HPAI was confirmed.

The farms were put under movement restrictions. All birds on the infected farms have been culled, and thorough cleaning and disinfection have been conducted.

Other poultry farms within a three-kilometre radius of infected premises will be subject to intensified surveillance for three months.
