Four New Outbreaks of Avian Flu Reported in Burkina Faso

BURKINA FASO - Four new outbreaks of H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza have been confirmed.

According to Follow-up Report No.3 dated 9 May to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), the veterinary authority in Burkina Faso reports four new outbreaks of high-path avian flu in poultry.

The outbreaks stated between 1 March and 15 April in the states of Kadiogo (two outbreaks) and Boulkiemde (one outbreak) in central Burkina Faso and the first outbreak was in the state of Nahouri, which is in the south of the country and borders Ghana.

In total, 2,054 birds were affected; 1,328 showed symptoms, 555 died and 529 were destroyed.

Two outbreaks were on farms and the others in backyard flocks.

The presence of the H5N1 subtype of the virus has been confirmed.
