09 July 2015

TAIWAN - There have been more outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Taiwan.

There were outbreaks of both the H5N8 and H5N2 serotypes.

There were four H5N2 outbreaks, affecting 24,976 birds out of a susceptible population of 65,390. The infected birds died, and the remaining birds were destroyed. Three chicken farms and one goose farm were affected.

Locations of the H5N2 outbreaks

The H5N8 virus only affected one farm. Abnormal mortality levels were observed, and there were 9051 confirmed cases of avian flu. The rest of the susceptible population, amounting to 7649 birds, were destroyed.

Location of the H5N8 outbreak

Farms affected by all the outbreaks were subjected to thorough cleaning and disinfection after the stamping out operation, and have been put under movement restrictions. Surrounding poultry farms within a 3 km radius of the infected farms are also under intensified surveillance for 3 months.
