AGROCALIDAD issued Resolution 0101, partially lifting the ban on US-origin poultry and poultry products, effectively recognising that avian flu is not transmittable through exposure to processed poultry products and poultry meal.

Ecuadorian importers confirm that they are once again obtaining import permits for US poultry products such as chicken nuggets, grilled and crispy fillets, as well as poultry meal, according to a report from the US' Foreign Agricultural Service.

Feed manufacturers are now also obtaining authorisations to import US-origin poultry meal. AGROCALIDAD Resolution 0101 (attached below) continues to ban imports of US-origin live fowl, chilled/frozen poultry meat and poultry products, and eggs/egg products.

The ban is in response to the recent reports of avian flu in the states of Arkansas, California, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Washington, and Wisconsin.

The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) updated the export library on July 21, permitting the resumption of US processed poultry products and poultry meal from states, regions, zones or areas not affected by avian flu.

Processed poultry products originating in counties affected by HPAI are currently not eligible for export. FSIS is currently not certifying for export to Ecuador any raw, fresh or frozen poultry meat.

In calendar year 2014, Ecuador imported from the United States $6 million in live fowl (over 850,000 baby chicks), poultry meat and poultry products, as well as eggs and products.
