Brazilian Minister Reaffirms Commitment to Animal Health

BRAZIL - Brazil's Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply has committed to prioritising the use of the department's resources on protecting animal health.

Katia Abreu was speaking at the opening of the International Exhibition of Poultry and Swine in Sao Paulo.

"We need a public commitment to the defence of agriculture," the minister said, commenting on the government's initiatives to expand exports in the sector.

"If the ministry's budget had only $1, it would go to agricultural defence."

According to her, it is no use having good logistics in the country if there is no animal health guarantee. The minister referred to the challenge of increasing in Brazilian exports and conquest of new markets, for which animal health certification is a basic prerequisite.

In the event's opening speech, Ms Abreu told the governors and businessmen present that commitment to animal and plant health must be a priority.

She also encouraged entrepreneurs to join the ministry's effort in opening new markets.
