Avian Flu Found in Poultry Market in Cote D'Ivoire

07 August 2015

COTE D'IVOIRE - There have been two more outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Cote D'Ivoire.

The two outbreaks were of the H5N1 subtype, and 880 birds in total died from the disease.

1477 cases were recorded. The remaining 297 birds were destroyed to prevent the disease from spreading.

One of the premises affected was a backyard holding in the village of Amanibo, located 2 km away from Bouaké. The other affected location was the big poultry market in Abidjan.

The outbreaks are thought to result from the introduction of new live animals and contact with wild species.
