Brazil's July Chicken Exports Hit New Record

11 August 2015

BRAZIL - Brazilian exports of chicken meat hit a new record of total exports (cuts, whole chicken, processed, salted and embedded) in July, surpassing the previous milestone of June this year.

According to surveys of the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA), 447,200 tons of chicken meat were exported during the month of July.

This exceeded June's exports by 52,000 tons - an increase of 13 per cent. Compared to the same period last year, the balance achieved in July was 17.3 per cent higher.

In revenue, in the exports achieved another historical record: July shipments generated US$2.488 billion, 42.4 per cent higher than the performance recorded in the same month of 2014.

"For the first time, we surpassed the mark of 400 thousand tons shipped in a single month at the same time we got back to record higher foreign exchange revenue to $700 million.

"There was growth in virtually all major markets, both in comparison with the same period last year, and in relation to the previous month. This points to a positive trend for the second half," said ABPA's vice president for poultry, Ricardo Santin.

Consolidating the recovery in the pace of exports in 2015, the total volume shipped by chicken meat exporters in the year so far reached 2.437 million tons, a balance 4.53 per cent higher than in the first seven months of 2014.

The performance is also positive in revenue, with 22.1 per cent high, amounting to R$12.710 billion. In dollar terms, there was a decrease of 8 per cent, with US$4.199 billion.

"Amid the country's crisis scenario, the poultry exports follow at a strong pace... sanitation remains our main passport," said Francisco Turra, chief executive of ABPA, noting that Brazil has never recorded outbreaks of bird flu in its territory - one of its main competitive advantages in the international market.
