NIGERIA - A poultry smuggler has been caught with 206 cartons of banned products worth N1.2 million.
The capture is part of Operation Hawk Descend, a customs operation against poultry smugglers in the country, to try and prevent local poultry meat producers being undercut by imported products.
The Nigerian authorities have also previously reported that the smuggled products are a food safety hazard due to breaks in the cold chain.
The customs comptroller said the latest seizures made a total of N17.3 million poultry products the command has seized under the operation since July.
