H5N8 Avian Flu Spreads in South Korean Poultry

SOUTH KOREA - Twelve outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza serotype H5N8 have been reported this week in South Korea.

The outbreaks occurred in the southern regions of Jeollanam-Do and Gwangju Metropolitan City.

Positive tests for the virus resulted in the destruction of over 144,000 birds.

The birds were destroyed on commercial farms holding chickens and ducks.

The source of the outbreaks is unknown, as the veterinary authority is still implementing an epidemiological survey.
