Americans Set to Give Thanks for Their Many Blessings - Healthy Poultry Among Them25 November 2015
Thursday is Thanksgiving Day in the United States — a time when people of all faiths and ethnic backgrounds gather with family, friends and even strangers to give thanks for their many blessings, large and small.
It’s also a day built around healthy poultry - especially turkey, which reportedly was served at the first Thanksgiving in the Plymouth Colony of Massachusetts in 1621, along with clams, lobsters, eels, fish, venison, corn and porridge.
On Thanksgiving Day, 88 per cent of Americans will feast on turkey, which translates to about 46 million turkeys or nearly 20 per cent of the country’s annual crop. They’ll also be paying a little more for it this year due to the avian flu outbreak, which claimed some 48 million turkeys and layer chickens earlier this year.
