The award, which recognises talent, enthusiasm and commitment to training, is sponsored by Zoetis and organised in conjunction with the British Poultry Council (BPC) and the magazine Poultry World. The winner, who will receive a £2000 training grant, will be presented with the award by Farming Minister George Eustice at the BPC annual awards presentation event at the House of Commons on Tuesday December 8.

The finalists are Laura Addison who works in the P D Hook hatchery at Dalton in North Yorkshire, Andrew Bumfrey who manages a turkey farm for Bernard Matthews in Norfolk, Annabelle Heath who works with broiler breeders for Cargill Meats in Herefordshire and Daniel Roberts who is a trainee area manager for Faccenda Foods in Oxfordshire.

Laura Addison, who lives at Thirsk and has been working at the P D Hook hatchery since 2009, has impressed her employers by a structured approach to making improvements and by taking on responsibility for ensuring that all new starters are fully aware of the importance of biosecurity and hygiene, which has led to a comprehensive induction programme being developed.

Andrew Bumfrey, who lives at Scarning, near Dereham, has eight years’ experience on Bernard Matthews’ turkey breeder and commercial growing farms and in the hatchery. He has recently been selected to manage a new performance house, one of the company’s biggest recent investments that will investigate improved welfare and environmental credentials as well as bird performance.

Annabelle Heath, who lives at Telford, Shropshire, has a family background in poultry but initially began her career with six years in the horseracing world. Eighteen months ago she joined Cargill Meats where she is assistant manager of its Ermine Street farm which rears broiler breeders. She has just been accepted into Tesco’s Future Farmers’ Foundation training programme.

Daniel Roberts, who lives at Banbury, Oxfordshire, focused on training after rejoining Faccenda Foods in 2012 and was last year offered a post-graduate course hosted at Harper Adams University through his company’s partnership programme. He has now been promoted to trainee area manager where he is servicing 3.8 million broilers across 17 farms.

The finalists were chosen by a judging panel comprising Philip Clarke, editor of Poultry World; James Porritt, Zoetis poultry manager for UK and Ireland; Richard Griffiths, BPC food policy director, and Jason Gittins, ADAS senior consultant.
