The H5N1 strain of the flu was discovered in five layer pens at a farm in Niamey, Tillaberi.

All 86,000 birds at the farm have been destroyed as a result of the outbreak.

The source of the outbreak is still unknown but it is thought to be possibly due to the introduction of new live animals and through biosecurity.
