Animal Welfare Progress in Poultry Recognised at Awards

29 June 2016

GLOBAL - Compassion in World Farming recognised food businesses from all corners of the globe at an annual welfare awards ceremony in Berlin on 28 June.

Twenty-seven Good Egg and Good Chicken Awards were presented at this year’s Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards, celebrating the commitment of leading food businesses to improving animal welfare standards.

Winners were announced from North and South America, Australasia, China and Europe, demonstrating that awareness of farm animal welfare is rising in the public and business consciousness globally.

The higher welfare policies and practices of this year’s 41 main award winners are set to benefit over 85 million animals each year.

This year’s Awards saw a number of ‘firsts’ for poultry with CiWF presenting their first ever Good Egg Award in South America to Chilean hen farmer, Pablo Albarren from Ecoterra, and there was also the first Good Egg Award presented for quail egg production.

Other winners included McDonald’s UK for best marketing surrounding their work on tree cover for free-range hens, and Clarence Court, part of Stonegate, which was presented a Good Egg Award for their free-to-fly quail egg production.

Tracey Jones, Director of Food Business at Compassion said: “Our poultry award winners demonstrate that a real step change in attitudes and approach towards welfare is taking place.

"Thanks to our winners, chickens who are so often caged or confined, can have a life worth living and even a good life, where their needs are met and the value of their lives embraced.

"There is still much to be done to spread the animal welfare message and ensure more and more businesses globally realise there is not just an ethical imperative to address farm animal welfare but a commercial one too.”
