Indian Poultry Producers Face Continued Maize Price Difficulties

04 July 2016

INDIA - Steady rises in the price of maize (corn) over the last six months, coupled with lower returns from egg sales, are leading poultry producers to ask for more feed to be imported.

In Andhra Pradesh, the poultry sector is asking ministers to enable more maize imports, despite already importing 500,000 tonnes from Russia earlier in the year, according to Indian newspaper The Hindu.

“A delegation from the poultry industry called on Union Minister for Commerce Nirmala Sitaraman early this week and sought permission to import five lakh metric tonnes of maize. The Minister responded positively and said that the option of tax waiver on the import will be considered,” said Padala Subba Reddy, president of Anaparthy Poultry Farmers’ Welfare Association and director of the State Veterinary Council.

Mr Reddy called for a long term solution to this continuing problem, to ensure viability of poultry units in future.
