Spain's Poultry Meat Exports Up 10 Per Cent in 2015

SPAIN - Spain increased exports of poultry meat by 10.37 per cent last year, with 227,335 tons sold.

Nearly 150,000 tons of this was sent to a country of the European Union, reported Spanish news agency Efeagro.

According to annual meat data from 2015, published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment (Magrama), poultry meat sales in the EU were up 7.63 per cent, while exports to third countries increased by 15.78 per cent.

France and Portugal were the main destinations of Spanish poultry meat, with about 48,000 tons sold in both cases.

Spain also imported 4.34 per cent more poultry last year compared to 2014. Most of this meat came from the rest of the EU.

The country produced 1.41 million tons of poultry meat in 2015, down 1.64 per cent compared to 2014, and is in fifth place in the EU production rankings, after Germany, France, Poland and the UK.

Spain had a total of 19,026 poultry farms in 2015, representing an increase of 20.84 per cent ​​over the previous year, and a census of 4.06 million breeding birds for meat (-3.86 per cent on 2014).
