GPA Introduces Private Label Eggs from Non-Caged Chickens

21 July 2017

BRAZIL - Brazilian retailer GPA has introduced a new range of eggs produced by non-caged chickens at a more affordable price than free-range and organic eggs. Earlier this year, GPA committed to sell only private label eggs from hens reared outside of cages by 2025.

Launched under the Taeq brand, the product is packaged in boxes of ten eggs, and will be sold throughout the Pão de Açúcar network in the state of São Paulo and in the cities of Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba, Uberlândia and Campo Grande, as well as in selected Extra hypermarkets in the same locations.

According to European Supermarket Magazine, the product costs, on average, 15 per cent more than conventional eggs. However, it is 40 per cent cheaper than free-range eggs.

Animal Welfare

GPA says that this production format gives chickens the freedom to scratch, perch, bathe in dust and flap their wings. In addition to receiving a balanced diet and water at will, they are treated with all necessary care so that they can develop in a healthy way.

These attributes in the production method ensures animal welfare and meet the freedoms recognised internationally by the World Organisation for Animal Health.

"GPA was the only Brazilian retailer to make a public commitment to animal welfare in the production of eggs and is also pioneering the development of the production chain," said Laura Pires, director of sustainability at GPA.
