European Supermarket Magazine reports that Carrefour is committing to this new strategy for Carrefour-brand eggs sold in Spain and Romania in addition to its targets set for France, Italy, Poland and Belgium.

The retailer says that it is working with its partners on ending sales from cage-reared hens on a larger scale by 2025.

"Carrefour will work closely alongside its producers and suppliers in meeting this goal. Carrefour is calling upon national-brand suppliers to take up this European commitment and so ensure that this transformation applies as widely as possible to the market," the retailer said in a statement.

Growing Initiative

Carrefour added that it will support its suppliers and customers to extend this initiative to all eggs, so that by 2025, all of the eggs it sells are produced using non-cage farming systems.

In December 2016, the French retailer declared it would stop sourcing supplies of own-brand eggs from cage-reared hens by 2020 in France.

In September of this year, Carrefour Belgium introduced a line of free-range chickens that have been reared without antibiotics as part of its Carrefour Quality Line.

Carrefour sells 480 million units of eggs every year. Its Carrefour-brand eggs are produced by local and French suppliers.
