A step towards this was made after a visit by the Food and Veterinary Office (FVO) of the European Commission, and they sent a positive report to the authorities a few days ago, reports Sarajevo Times.

Technical compliance and an official permission for the export of chicken is expected from the EU in the next couple of weeks.

"If BiH passes, there will be unlimited possibilities to obtain the permit. We have ten, maybe even 15 companies, which are able to export," according to Minister of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH, Mirko Sarovic.

Therefore, domestic chicken producers could produce up to 15 tons of chicken and chicken products annually instead of the current 10 tons. Consumable eggs could end up on the European market soon as well.

However, red meat is unlikely to get permission for exports in the next year. Mad cow disease is the main reason for extra caution in the EU, even though the country has not registered with the disease.
