OIE Reports HPAI Outbreak in Netherlands

12 December 2017

NETHERLANDS - Dr Christianne Bruschke, Chief Veterinary Officer at the Ministry of Economic Affairs has reported an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N6 bird flu at a farm in Flevoland.

The outbreak was initially observed on 7 December and confirmed the next day. An immediate notification was sent to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) on 10 December.

According to the OIE, a total of 15985 fattening ducks were found to be susceptible to the H5N6 strain, out of which 40 birds were found dead. The remaining 15945 ducks were killed and disposed of.

The OIE reports that on 8 December, a 3 km surveillance zone and a 10 km protection zone had been established. There are four other premises within the 3 km zone. All susceptible animals on the infected premises have been killed.

All premises in the 3 km zone have been screened. All samples of the screened premises were tested negative. This H5N6 subtype is a reassortment linked to H5N8 and not the Asian zoonotic H5N6, reports OIE.

Some of the control measures applied include movement control inside the country, screening, stamping out, control of wildlife reservoirs, zoning and disinfection.

Vaccination of the affected birds has been prohibited and none of them have received treatment.
