In a one-week survey conducted by Daily Monitor in Karamoja cattle markets, it was discovered that a cow that was sold between Shs900,000 and Shs1m three months ago, is now sold in a range of Shs1.8mand Shs2m.

A goat three months ago, was sold at Shs100,000 but currently, it is sold at Shs 150,000 to Shs200,000.
A sheep which was sold at Shs 90,000 is now sold at more than Shs100,000.

This newspaper also learnt that a chicken weighing three to five kilogrammes was sold at Shs17,000 but currently is sold at Shs30,000.

Mr Patrick Lote, a cattle trader in Kanawat Cattle Market in Kotido District, said for the last three weeks, a large number of cattle had been sold in Kotido.

He said traders from South Sudan, Kenya and within Uganda are the ones buying livestock and chicken in Karamoja market.

"We are trying to take advantage of this Christmas to make more profits from livestock," he said.

Food prices have also doubled, especially in Moroto Municipality.

Maize flour grade one which was sold at Shs3,000 is now sold at Shs3,700 while in Kotido is at Shs3,900. The price of rice in Moroto has been increased from Shs 3,400 a kilogramme to Shs4,000.
