IPPE Insights: Prevention Works offers holistic approach to animal health

17 May 2018

Boehringer Ingelheim believes the value of an animal health company goes beyond the products they sell. At IPPE, Dr. David Smith, director of veterinary services for the poultry business with Boehringer Ingelheim, spoke to The Poultry Site's Sarah Mikesell about their Prevention Works platform.

"Prevention Works is the program that Boehringer Ingelheim has introduced to as a foundation of our business," said Dr. Smith. "It's how we interact with our customers, and how our products are positioned with our customers. It's based on the idea that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. We would rather keep animals healthy than try to make them healthy once they become sick."

Prevention Works is a holistic approach to poultry health built on Boehringer Ingelheim's range of innovative world-class vaccines complemented by:

  • Professional people with a passion for poultry
  • State-of-the-art diagnostics and support from global research facilities
  • Tools to evaluate the success of prevention

"Producers are in the business of turning grain protein into meat and to do that you need healthy animals; sick animals are not efficient animals, " noted Dr. Smith. "Anything the producer can do that will improve the health of the flock and prevent disease, rather than trying to treat it, results in more efficiency and more profitable for them. Boehringer's goal is to help produce a high quality, safe product that can be used to help feed people around the world."

Held in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, the 2018 International Production & Processing Expo (IPPE) brought together more than 30,000 poultry, meat and feed industry leaders from all over the world in attendance. In 2019, IPPE will be held Feb. 12-14.
