Bill passed in Kansas House to allow large-scale poultry operations

13 March 2018

TOPEKA — The Kansas House gave final passage Monday to a bill that would allow large, factory-scale poultry feeding operations to do business in Kansas, reports Peter Hancock for the Lawrence Journal-World

The bill, Senate Bill 405, would allow dry manure processing systems to grow up to 300,000 birds in confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs) which would supply the processing plant. Companies such as Tyson Foods would operate such a facility, which it unsuccessfully proposed to do last year elsewhere.

The report states that public opinion is against such CAFOs, and amendments to allow the public to protest and vote against these plants were rejected, leading some House members to vote against it.
