11 December 2018

CHINA, 11 December 2018 - Action to promote better treatment of farm animals in China started about five years ago, according to Sun Zhongchao, who has researched the subject for eight years and was the first Chinese expert to gain a doctorate in animal welfare studies

Pigs, ducks, egg-laying hens and broiler chickens are all benefiting from the change of approach, he said.

At the World Congress on Farm Animal Welfare in 2017, Chinese government for the first time indicated support for improvements to conditions and treatment of animals. Sun Zhongchao indicated that although it will not be easy for China to meet the World Organization for Animal Health's requirements, China's vice-minister at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural affairs discussed the importance of green development in china both to meet consumer demand and to improve food safety.
