14 January 2019

PHILIPPINES - A poultry group expressed dismay at the influx of imported chicken in the country, saying it has caused the local industry huge losses

Attorney Jose Inciong, president of the United Broiler Raisers' Association, on 12 January said "record-high" chicken imports have hurt the local industry.

Ijn an interview with Super Radyo dzBB, Mr Inciong said that imports are hurting local poultry farmers and since last September, many have faced substantial losses.

He said a proposal was made in August to reduce tariffs for all agricultural products. The special safeguards under the World Trade Organisation (WTO) have been removed for chicken, and as a result, this has hurt chicken importers.

"There is a lot of local supply, plus imports," Mr Inciong added.
