Print This Page Jobs boom - and it's thanks to chickens
AUSTRALIA - Thousands of jobs will be created as the state's chicken industry trebles in size over the next 10 years, a government blueprint predicts.Released today, the Poultry Meat in South Australia - Strategic Directions 2005-2015 plan estimates annual production in the industry will reach almost $1 billion in 2015 - up from $325 million this year.
This growth is expected to create 3600 jobs - 1200 directly to the industry and 2400 in supporting industries. Areas include farms, retail outlets, takeaway food, transport, building, and restaurant industries.
Consumption of poultry meat in Australia has grown steadily, with each person now eating an average of 35.1kg of chicken each year. Chicken makes up 39 per cent of the nation's total meat consumption.
Lisa Mantas, who runs Chicken Mate at Colonel Light Gardens, said chicken meat was "more and more popular" with consumers.
