AUSTRALIA - The South Australian egg industry is in tatters and it is too late for Fleurieu Peninsula egg producers, South Coast Eggs.Owned and operated by Peter and Tonia Ebbs at Hindmarsh Tiers for 14 years, the business suffered at the inaction of the state government and eventually succumbed to economic pressures in September 2005.
The impact of the closure of the commercial side of the business was immediate on the community with 10 staff retrenched and the culling of over 17,000 birds.
"We saw the writing on the wall and started downsizing over a 12 month period. "We now have only 800 birds for farm gate sales, as it became obvious the state government doesn't want a South Australian egg industry, Mrs Ebbs said.
