Imported meat costs rise in Russia

RUSSIA - The Russia Federal Customs Service plans to increase the cost of imported meat. The new prices affect the minimal cost of meat imports and were expected to come into effect this week.

The new pricing policy has led to fears in the Russian meat industry that it could put pork out of the reach of some consumers. The increase is part of a budget review and is expected to raise the price of pork and beef, generally, but will not affect poultry imports as severely.

The rises see the minimum price of beef increase 200 percent, chilled pork carcasses increase 140 percent, and frozen pork increase 100 percent. The minimum price of high-quality chilled pork cuts will rise up to 300 percent.

Meanwhile, according to analysts at Meat and Livestock Australia, Russia could turn to Colombia and Bolivia for beef imports because of the self-imposed export ban on Argentine beef and because of foot-and-mouth disease concerns over beef from some states in Brazil. Russia recently sent a delegation of vets to Colombia to inspect the facilities for beef production in the country.
