Gordeyev Says Poultry Quota Rules to Change

RUSSIA - The Agriculture Ministry said Friday that Russia should change the current system of setting import quotas on poultry meat, indicating its intention to shield domestic producers from foreign -- mostly U.S. -- competition.

The ministry revises quotas annually, and currently the quota is distributed to importers in line with volumes they brought into the country in the previous year. That system should be abolished, Agriculture Minister Alexei Gordeyev said.

"It is essential to keep the existing distribution of quotas between market participants unchanged in 2007," Gordeyev said in comments posted on the ministry's web site Friday.

This year, U.S. exporters have taken advantage of problems encountered by domestic producers amid outbreaks of avian flu, flooding the market with their own produce, Prime-Tass quoted Gordeyev as saying earlier.

If the new system is introduced, U.S. companies will not be able to transfer this increased share to 2007.
