Bulgaria bans poultry, egg exports over Newcastle disease outbreak

BULGARIA - Bulgaria has banned all exports of live poultry, raw poultry products and brood eggs to European Union countries, the national veterinary service said in a statement.

The ban will remain in force until the European Commission decides to ban poultry imports from the southern Bulgarian region of Kardzhali following a recent outbreak of Newcastle disease, a milder version of bird flu, there, the statement said Thursday.

Suspected cases of bird flu in poultry were detected last week on two farms in the village of Slanchogled in Kardzhali but tests proved the outbreak was not caused by the potentially lethal H5 or H7 bird flu viruses.
