Print This Page Russia Mulls Tougher Stance on US Poultry and Beef
RUSSIA - Washington has warned of "serious" consequences after Russia introduced a limited ban on U.S. poultry imports and separately threatened to revise quotas of U.S. beef shipments into the country.Moscow has decided to outlaw the import of poultry and birds from the state of Michigan where a bird flu virus was found in swans, Agriculture Minister Alexei Gordeyev announced Saturday.
"We must make sure that this dangerous infection will not be brought into Russia along with poultry meat imports," he said.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture said last this week that tests conducted in the state had found a strain of the bird flu virus in two wild swans, but it was not the deadly strain that has killed humans in Asia and spread westwards to the Middle East and Europe.
