Chile Opens Market to US Duck Meat

On November 23, 2012 the Chilean Ministry of Agriculture (SAG) and USDA Foreign Agricultural Service, Food Safety Inspection Service, and Animal and Plant Health and Inspection Service finished negotiating the certificate language to export frozen and chilled poultry meat to include duck, opening a new market for US duck meat exports. In 2008, Chile recognized USDA’s inspection and Control System for chicken and turkey under Resolution 441. Upon industry’s request, a formal request was sent to SAG July 6, 2012 seeking reconsideration of the definition for poultry to include duck. Eventually SAG passed Resolution 5851/2012, repealing 441/2008, to include duck in the definition of poultry (Chilean norm CFR 9). Duck is considered a gourmet product amongst Chilean consumers.
