USDA International Egg and Poultry: AfricaUSDA International Egg and Poultry: Africa

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) divides Africa into North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa. North Africa includes the countries of Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia with the balance of countries in Africa in the Sub-Saharan Region. The majority of the United States (US) poultry export exports to Africa go to the Sub-Saharan Region.

January 2013 total U.S. broiler meat exports to Sub-Saharan Africa are up 32% over January 2012 which compares to a 5% increase for total U.S. broiler meat exports for same comparable time frame. The Sub-Saharan ranks 4th behind North America, East Asia and the Former Soviet Union-12 for U.S. broiler meat exports.

What is significant about U.S. broiler meat exports to North Africa, even though the region ranks 13th for U.S. broiler meats, their U.S. broiler meat imports for January 2013 are also considerably above January 2012 levels.

The Sub-Saharan Region in Africa continues to be the dominant region in Africa for January 2013 U.S. turkey meat exports with nothing of significance going to the North Africa Region. Sub- Saharan Africa currently ranks 3rd behind North America and East Asia in regions of the world for January 2013 U.S. turkey meat exports. Total January 2013 U.S. turkey meat exports to the Sub- Saharan Africa Region are 185% higher than the same comparable time frame in 2012. Total January 2013 U.S. turkey meat exports are up 4% from the same time frame in 2012.

North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa rank 9th and 11th in regions of the world for January 2013 U.S. egg product exports. U.S. January 2013 egg product exports to the region are mixed when compared to the same period in 2012. U.S. egg product exports to North Africa are higher so far for 2013 are higher while Sub-Saharan Africa is lower.
