Domestic broiler meat production is forecast to reach 2.975 million metric tons (MMT) in 2013 despite outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI H7N3) in the states of Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, and Jalisco. Production estimates for 2012 were revised downward to 2.958 MMT from 2.965 MMT. In 2011 broiler meat production totaled 2.906 MMT. In 2011, Jalisco was ranked as Mexico’s largest producing state in regard to poultry meat and table eggs, representing 11.5% and 50.3% of domestic production respectively.

Egg production is forecast to reach 2.3 MMT in 2013. According to UNA, egg production in 2012 reached 2.386 MMT. Mexico had led the world in per capita annual egg consumption (22.5 kilograms) prior to the HPAI outbreaks in 2012, according to UNA. Barring no new developments, official and private sources are expecting egg production to stabilize in the short to medium term given the repopulation efforts by Mexican industry of 4.5 to 5 million birds per month. According to data, the annual average price Mexico paid for US chicken hatching egg prices in 2012 was $3.00/dozen. From January-March 2013 Mexico was paying an average of $3.60/dozen versus $3.00/dozen during the same period in 2012. During March 2013, Mexico was paying an average of $4.00/dozen.
