International Egg and Poultry Review: ChinaInternational Egg and Poultry Review: China

Recently, the Office of Agricultural Affairs in Beijing (OAA/Beijing) revised its unofficial forecast for Chinese broiler meat production 70,000 Metric Tons (MT) lower to 13.7 million Metric Tons (MMT) for 2012, due to lower average slaughter weights.

Chinese producers concerned with cheaper pork prices and oversupply, weak demand, and declining broiler meat prices slaughtered birds prematurely resulting in lower average slaughter weights.

Estimated broiler consumption in China was also revised downward to 13.5 MMT, a reduction of about 1% or 87,000 MT. Due to lower pork prices demand is expected to shift from broiler meat to pork as broiler meat is a substitute for pork. An outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza in Hong Kong appears to have had no effect on Chinese consumption.

OAA/Beijing also reduced broiler meat import projections in 2012 by 17,000 MT to 233,000 MT, due to lower pork prices and expected reductions in consumer demand for broiler meat. Chinese broiler meat export forecasts remain unchanged. On side note, Canada approved market access for 10 Chinese cooked poultry processing plants in March 2012; however no shipments have been made to date just yet.
