USDA International Egg and Poultry: Poultry in IndiaUSDA International Egg and Poultry: Poultry in India

Broiler meat production is forecast to rise 6% to 3.6 million tons in 2014, fueled by escalating demand for animal protein and a rising preference for processed poultry products, an indication of changing tastes and preferences. Chicken meat production in India was ranked 6th in the world in 2011, using FAOSTAT rankings.

India’s per capita consumption of poultry meat is forecast at 2.2 kg per annum in 2014; chicken is India’s preferred non-vegetarian protein source. Poultry per capita consumption in 2014 is up 16% from 2010 while total consumption increased 23% for the same time period, due to a growing population. Domestic consumption is not expected to exceed the rate of population growth. Major drivers of consumption are: an expanding middle class, increasing employment levels and incomes, new demand for ready-to-eat products and the growing presence of affordable quick service restaurants, and a general preference for poultry meat over other meats due to low prices and cultural and religious non-preferences for pork and beef. It is important to note that while poultry and egg consumption are expected to grow in India, local dietary practices tend to prefer vegetarian protein sources, even among non-vegetarian consumers. As a result, it is unlikely that per capita consumption of meat and eggs will grow to levels seen in other countries.

India is one of the world’s top producers of hen eggs, ranking 3rd behind China (1st) and the U.S. (2nd) in 2011 (FAOSTAT in tons). Egg production is anticipated to reach 65,480 million eggs in 2011-12 (March-February), up 4% from the previous year. The per capita availability of eggs has increased from 47 eggs per annum in 2007-08 to 53 eggs per annum in 2010-11. In 2010/11 fowl egg production totaled 61.4 billion and duck egg production totaled 1.6 billion for a total egg production of 63.0 billion eggs.

United States WTO Dispute Against India’s Discriminatory Agricultural Trade Practices

On 6 March 2012, the United States requested consultations with India with respect to the prohibitions imposed by India on the importation of various agricultural products from the United States purportedly because of concerns related to Avian Influenza.

At its meeting on 25 June 2012, the Dispute Settlement Body established a panel. China, Colombia, Ecuador, the European Union, Guatemala, Japan and Viet Nam reserved their third party rights. Subsequently, Argentina, Australia and Brazil reserved their third-party rights. On 7 February 2013, the United States requested the Director-General to determine the composition of the panel. On 18 February 2013, the Director-General composed the panel. On 5 August 2013, the Chair of the panel informed the DSB that the panel expects to issue its final report to the parties no sooner than June 2014, taking into account the scale and complexity of the dispute.
