Total January-May 2014 United States (U.S.) broiler meat exports increased 1% from 2013 and 80% since 2004 for comparable time frames.

For U.S. broiler meat exports by regions of the world for January-May 2014, Sub-Saharan Africa is the 4th most popular region behind North America, East Asia and the former Soviet Union. Total January-May 2014 U.S. broiler meat exports to Sub- Saharan Africa are up 2% since 2013 and 315% since 2004 for comparable time frames. Leg quarters have dominated U.S. broiler meat exports so far in 2014 to Sub-Saharan Africa. The Sub- Saharan Africa Region includes most of Africa, except the countries of Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia.

Total Sub-Saharan broiler meat imports for 2014 from all sources are estimated to be 1,218 million metric tons (MMT), 4% higher than 2013 and up 209% since 2004. Total estimated Sub-Saharan broiler meat production for 2014 is 1,567 MMT, up 2% since 2013 and 57% over 2004. Total domestic consumption for 2014 is 2,765 MMT, up 2% from 2013 and 99% since 2004. Sub-Saharan broiler meat exports are estimated to be 20 MMT in 2014, up from 17 MMT in 2013 and 6 MMT in 2004.

Turkey Meat

Total U.S. turkey exports for January-May, 2014 are down 5% from 2013 but up 102% since 2004 for comparable time frames. For total U.S. turkey meat exports by regions of the world for January- May 2014, Sub-Saharan Africa ranked 3rd behind North America and East Asia. U.S. January-May 2014 turkey meat exports to Sub-Saharan Africa are down 24% from 2013, but tremendously higher than 2004 for comparable time frames. To date in 2014 frozen wings have been the most popular U.S. item exported to Sub-Saharan Africa.

Sub-Saharan Africa imports most of the turkey meat consumed. For 2014 total estimated Sub-Saharan turkey meat production is 8 MMT while total estimated turkey meat imports are 55 MMT and total domestic turkey meat consumption is 63 MMT. Turkey meat production is unchanged from 2013 and up from 5 MMT in 2004. For 2014 total estimated turkey meat imports are up 22% from 2013 and 96% above 2004. Total domestic consumption for 2014 is estimated to be 19% above 2013 and 91% higher than 2004.
