Taiwan

In response to a Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDv) in Taiwan, pork prices in 2014 have increased dramatically since 2013. From January 5, 2014 – August 25, 2014 Taiwan experienced 34 outbreaks of PEDv. In the second and third quarter of 2014 local pork prices in Taiwan hit a record high resulting in increased demand for poultry.

In 2014 Taiwan is forecast to import 145,000 metric tons (MT) of total broiler meat, a 31% increase from 2013. In 2015 Taiwan’s total broiler meat imports are projected to increase 24% to 180,000 MT.

Even though Taiwan’s self sufficiency rate for poultry products is currently over 80%, Taiwan’s broiler meat production for 2014 is forecast to decrease 2% to 480,000 MT and projected to drop 1% in 2015. On April 21, 2014 Taiwan experienced an outbreak of low pathogenic avian influenza virus H5N2 in a chicken breeder flock. Intensified surveillance was carried on for 3 months. With no other incidents detected, the outbreak was declared resolved on July 29, 2014.

The United States (U.S.) and Canada are the major poultry product suppliers to Taiwan. The U.S. accounted for over 80% of the poultry market during the last several years. Hungary has also been a consistent minor turkey meat supplier Taiwan in the past.

Total January-September 2014 U.S. broiler meat exports to Taiwan have increased 35% from the same time frame in 2013 to about 92,000 MT. So far in 2014 East Asia is the number 2 region of the world for U.S. broiler meat exports, after North America, and Taiwan is the number 1 U.S. broiler meat export destination in East Asia.

Taiwan ranks 6th in the world for U.S. January-September 2014 total broiler meat exports. Taiwan is the number 2 broiler meat export destination for Canada, after the U.S. So far Canada has increased their broiler meat exports to Taiwan about 19% from 2013-2014 to 14,751 MT.

Even though the U.S. dominated turkey meat exports to Taiwan from 2004 to 2011, it lost market share to Canada. Canada’s market share went from 5% in 2004 to 18% in 2011. U.S. January - September 2014 turkey meat exports to Taiwan are down 19% from the same time frame in 2013. Other poultry meat exports to Taiwan consist mostly of chicken paws and so far are down from 2013.
