World Duck Meat and Goose Meat

World production of indigenous duck meat totaled 4,358,170 metric tons in 2012, up 3.92% from 2011 (4,193,940 MT) and up 7.54% from 2010 (4,052,670 MT). Furthermore, a total of 2,935,530 thousand head of indigenous ducks were produced worldwide in 2012, 4.17% higher than 2011 (2,817,950 thousand head) and 7.90% higher than 2010 (2,720,540 thousand head).

China continues to lead the world in production of duck meat and goose meat in 2012. Behind China in duck meat production was France (292,000 MT), Malaysia (130,000 MT), Myanmar (106,000 MT), and Vietnam (92,000 MT). Based on statistical data from the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the US ranked 12th in the world in the production of duck meat with 54,000 MT in 2012, unchanged from 2011 (54,000 MT) and up 3.85% from 2010 (52,000 MT). Total world production of indigenous goose meat was 2,789,410 MT, up 9.44% from 2011 (2,548,880 MT), up 10.01% from 2010 (2,535,680 MT).

In 2012, a total of 699,060 thousand head of indigenous geese were produced worldwide, 8.87% higher than 2011 (642,093 thousand head) and 9.54% higher than 2010 (638,208 thousand head). Following China in goose meat production in 2012 was Egypt (33,000 MT), Hungary (29,000 MT), Taiwan (20,000 MT), and Poland (18,000 MT). No production data was available from FAO for goose meat in the US. As of December 2014, no new export or import data has been posted to FAO since the last update in 2013. US data shows duck meat exports totaled 4,308 MT, goose meat exports at 107 MT, and duck meat imports at 1,553 MT from January-October 2014.
