Ready-to-Cook Weight Up Slightly from Last Year

September 2015 contained 22 weekdays (including 1 holiday) and 4 Saturdays.

September 2016 contained 22 weekdays (including 1 holiday) and 4 Saturdays.

Poultry certified wholesome during September 2016 (ready-to-cook weight) totaled 4.01 billion pounds, up slightly from the amount certified in September 2015. The August 2016 revised certified total at 4.23 billion pounds, was up 8 percent from August 2015. The August revision represented an increase of 11.3 million pounds from last month's preliminary pounds certified.

The preliminary total live weight of all federally inspected poultry during September 2016 was 5.29 billion pounds, up slightly from 5.27 billion pounds a year ago. Young chickens inspected totaled 4.58 billion pounds, down 1 percent from September 2015. Mature chickens, at 72.9 million pounds, were up 6 percent from the previous year. Turkey inspections totaled 620 million pounds, up 10 percent from a year ago. Ducks totaled 15.5 million pounds, down 2 percent from last year. Young chickens slaughtered during September 2016 averaged 6.15 pounds per bird, down slightly from September 2015.

The average live weight of mature chickens was 6.20 pounds per bird, down 2 percent from a year ago. Turkeys slaughtered during September 2016 averaged 30.6 pounds per bird, up 3 percent from September 2015.

Ante-mortem condemnations during September 2016 totaled 12.9 million pounds. Condemnations were 0.24 percent of the live weight inspected, as compared with 0.25 percent a year earlier. Post-mortem condemnations, at 38.3 million pounds, were 0.95 percent of quantities inspected, as compared with 0.99 percent a year earlier.
