According to the NFU Online, insect feed could be a viable strategy for boosting poultry productivity and profitability for producers. The group’s research indicates that the production and use of insect protein in animal feed could be highly transformative to the feed industry and represent a key sustainability milestone.

The Insect Biomass Conversion Task & Finish Group is lobbying the UK Government to support insect protein as a new sustainable source for protein in food production. Using this type of protein to supplement more common alternatives such as soya or fishmeal could reduce land usage and give more protein options for farmers and aquaculturists. The insect feed industry could support 3,300 direct jobs and be worth £1 billion in five years.
