New milestone in BÁBOLNA TETRA genetic research

The modern layer hybrid production is facing to quite a lot and different type of demands are arising from the markets, the societies and the climate changes, like product quality, safety, efficiency, environment sensitivity, welfare expectations with evolving management systems, etc.. Therefore, selection targets are changing and diversifying rapidly. Importance of quick reaction and direction fine tuning are very important in the genetic work. Balanced development and high efficiency of it makes us capable to respond properly.

A new and huge laboratory development was launched at the BÁBOLNA TETRA company headquarter from more steps of different research projects. The Hungarian layer breeding company has very long collaboration with the corresponding universities and research institutes in the genetic and technological development. With the improvement in the productivity of the company an increasing possibility and demand for the innovation became obvious in the last few years. The several decades of fruitful joint work is going to step into a new stage where the research infrastructure and staff of the institutions has become tight for the developmental potential of the company.

While the strong research collaboration is intensified with concentrating really to the frontline of the innovation, the new research unit is concentrating on the industrial phase with the introduction of the scientific results directly to the genetic selection work.

The newly built TETRA Laboratory places great emphasis on molecular genetic tests for the performance of which there are different rooms designed and separated according to strict rules within the laboratory unit. At first, additional preparatory steps for the tests are performed, such as: DNA or RNA extraction, where the necessary equipment can be found. Within the unit, the strictest hygiene standards must be met in the main room, where the reagents required for the PCR run are prepared and weighed, and special equipment purchased for this purpose can also be found in the given room.

Nowadays, we are facing to the long-waited results and potential of the molecular marker research and genomic selection, which opens to the future with efficient and faster progress. Long previous years passed to establish the base of genomic selection, which demands a high volume, efficient and fast genotyping diagnostic work and the integration of genomic data into our selection equations.

We must mention those, apparently less scientific developments, which became the gold mine of our genetic research, the enormous test capacities, gradually developed to a never seen level of several ten thousand of test progenies. It elevated not only the traditional selection work, but also serves outstandingly the genomic research.

The new infrastructure is capable to transfer the research results with high throughput approaches to support the selection. Time and the information management is crucial in the intensive layer selection, it surpasses the frames of the conventional research laboratories.

Collecting performance data from pure lines and large number of test birds in an extreme long laying period focusing on all the important traits and revealing their relationships, provide precious data for genome discoveries. Evaluation of the high-resolution genomic data with the detailed performance results provide us the knowledge of playing genetic factors contributing to the desired phenotype. We are aware, that genomic research itself cannot provide alone the targeted progress, therefore we are developing intensively the performance test phase, not only with increasing the number of test birds, but also with the improvement of data collections, introducing new measurements and listing new traits to be observed to increase the efficiency and safety with the continuous development of high performance.

Harmonical development with the new phenotyping tools, data management and genome research means, that we had to develop the reproduction of the pure lines to be able to use properly the results of the testing and research phases.

As a result of constant development of phenotyping and genotyping, with the increasing pure line and test capacities, we learned extremely lot about the genetic and physiological nature of the egg production, which supports also more and more, the traditional selection methods.
