Highlights

U.S. Average Number of Layers Up 1 Percent: Layer numbers during 2006 averaged 346 million, up 1 percent from the year earlier. The annual average production per layer on hand in 2006 was 263 eggs, up slightly from the 2005 average of 262.

U.S. Egg Production Up 1 Percent: Egg production during the year ending November 30, 2006 totaled a record high 90.9 billion eggs, up 1 percent from 2005. Table egg production, at 78.0 billion eggs, was up 1 percent from the previous year. Hatching egg production, at 12.9 billion eggs, was down 2 percent from 2005.

U.S. December 1 Inventory Numbers: The total number of chickens on hand on December 1, 2006 (excluding commercial broilers) was 453 million birds, down slightly from last year.

U.S. Total Value: The total value of all chickens on December 1, 2006 was $1.18 billion, up 3 percent from December 1, 2005. The average value increased from $2.52 per bird on December 1, 2005, to $2.60 per bird on December 1, 2006.

This report contains annual estimates of Puerto Rico chickens and eggs. These estimates include chicken inventory (excluding commercial broilers) and egg production, and can be found within the respective annual and December 1 tables. Annual average number of layers for 2006 was 1.07 million compared to 1.13 million in 2005. Total egg production during 2006 was 285 million compared to 261 million in 2005.
